This Great Salvation 1 Peter 1:10-12 Jeremy Bell Five Realities of our Great Salvation: 1. Longed for by the prophets (verse 10) 2. Planned in eternity past (verses 10-11) 3. Brought to us by the Holy Spirit (verse 12) 4. The focus of angelic longing (verse 12) 5. A gift of grace to us Questions for Discussion/Application: *Consider taking time to read 1 Peter 1:10-12 out loud. What initial insights or observations of the text do you have? *Overall how have this passage and this sermon encouraged and ministered you? *Considering point #1 — “Longed for by the Prophets” — how does it encourage you to recall that we today as Christians experience the salvation that the prophets foretold and longed to see? *Under the second point, Jeremy quoted Piper as saying: “As far back as the plan of salvation reaches in the mind of God, so far back has Christ been willing and ready to give Himself for our sins. You were not loved for just a bloody moment of sacrifice in history. You have been loved for endless ages in the eternal plan of the Father and the Son to save sinners who trust Him.” How does the truth that you have been loved eternally encourage you? *Under the second point, theologian Edmund Clowney was quoted as saying: “Our suffering is not a sign that Christ has betrayed us, or that He is no longer Lord; rather it is a sign of our fellowship with the risen Lord who first suffered for us. Suffering, indeed, becomes a sign of the glory that is to follow.” *How does the that quote land on you? What questions perhaps does it raise for you? *How can the truth in what Clowney says be a comfort to us in the sorrows and afflictions we face? *Jeremy said, “The gospel is a heavenly announcement. And if we have a word delivered to us by the Holy Spirit, is it right that we treasure that Word? That we love that word? That we live our lives proclaiming that word?” *How can we grow in treasuring the word of the gospel? How do you want to grow in this way of not merely knowing the gospel, but treasuring the gospel in increasing measure? How practically can we do that? *The fourth point about the angels (v.12) longing to look into the things of our salvation — how does this reality highlight the glory of the gospel and our salvation? *Our salvation is a gift of grace (fifth point). Re-read the City Alight lyrics in the Recap. How does it affect you when you pause and consider this amazing gift of grace we have received? *Consider taking time to pray, asking God to help us to celebrate and treasure in increasing measure this glorious salvation we have been given as a gift.
